I’ll admit I’m not the best when it comes to technology. In fact I’m f***ing hopeless.
Pen and paper all the way!
I understand the basic fundamentals of how to turn a computer on and navigate around, type and send an email or call and text on my mobile phone but honestly I get a bit frazzled if there’s much more to do than that.
To me, I always thought copy and paste was going back and forth between two screens and retyping the entire script again remembering one sentence at a time!
I am learning though. I have no choice.
Obviously running a business has forced me to ‘get out of my comfort zone’ and learn how to be a bit more savvy. I’m slowly picking up little tricks here and there and it’s helping me be more efficient and effective. Heck I’m now designing the layout and sending this email out to you guys every week. Go me!
However I will always have my limitations. I know this and I’m ok with it. And I’m not sure I have the time and patience to go to computer school (if there even is such a thing).
Even though I know it’s important for me to learn new things and get uncomfortable, there’s still a point in time where it can detract from the progress and development in other areas. There’s a cut off where I’d be best utilising my strengths for the betterment of the business and everyone involved as opposed to getting bogged down by my weaknesses.
This is where I seek the services of my fellow staff members and delegate certain tasks. Some may say handballing but I think there’s a slight difference. Let me explain…
To me, handballing a task to someone means you can’t be bothered doing whatever it is you need to do even though you know how to do it.
Delegating on the other hand means giving a task to someone you know is better equipped and more efficient to handle getting it done.
It’s like I’m good at this – they’re good at that. They do their job well and I’ll do mine, we’ll compliment each other and the machine should run smoothly. A team effort.
Liken it to wanting to achieve your own health and fitness goals but don’t know where to start. Or maybe you are just struggling to make any sort of progress.
Maybe you aren’t sure of what’s required to get you where you want to go or just plain ignorant and believe it’s your way or the highway, even though you’re still in the same place you were 3 years ago.
If you do your job of turning up every week, work hard, eat well and take advice on board, in return I’ll do mine and guide you, motivate you and push you in the right direction in order to achieve the desired outcome. A team effort.
An admission of ones own lack of knowledge or skill can be very powerful and can trigger the start of significant change. Especially if you back it up with the drive to seek answers, learn or utilise tools to get whatever it is you want.
When it comes to the most important thing you have (your health) asking for help and delegating the task of guiding you on that journey sounds like a pretty good investment to me. One that could definitely get you what you want and more importantly, what you need.
