IF YOU WANT IT BAD ENOUGH YOU WILL FIND A WAY……
A few weeks ago on a Saturday night I lay on my couch with a glass of red wine and scrolled through Netflix looking for something to watch (I know what you are thinking…..”Gee wiz that’s one hell of a Saturday night”). I came across The Dawn Wall, which is a documentary about 2 x free climbers who set out to climb a seemingly impossible, 915 meter rock (The Dawn wall which is a flat granite surface located on the El Captain rock) in California’s Yosemite National Park. Before I move on any further, if you are yet to watch this then please take the time (doesn’t have to be a Saturday night, I understand some of you may have a social life a little more exciting than mine) to have a look. It’s an amazing story on a number of different levels and I am sure you will take a few things from it just like I did.
The one part that really stuck out to me was when they hit The Dyno, a part on the wall which was un-climbable to even the most experienced climbers. After days and days of trying this one particular climb/section the main climber (Tommy Caldwell) decided to create a different path (which they called the dyno down climb) around this part of the wall so they would in the long run still achieve what they set out to do (reach the top). This immediately got me thinking and sprung to mind that I could relate this directly back to our day to day life.
Life in general constantly throws curve balls (some more serious then others) and sometimes we don’t deal with this very well at all and tend to stop whatever goals we have set out to achieve because of these curve balls. Personally I hate the thought of “giving up” but admittedly have done so on many occasions throughout my life. With this experience I now try to help others through these life curve balls so they DON’T “give up”.
On a day-to-day basis we must continuously ask ourselves WHY? WHY are we going to the gym? WHY are we working? WHY am I in a relationship? For all the questions you ask yourself you should have somewhat of an answer, which is directing you through life and allowing you to achieve your personal goals. It is when we lose direction that we become confused and for some reason STOP that potentially may undo all the good work we have done in the previous weeks, months or even years.
It is when you get to this point that I want you to take a deep breath and put yourself on the dawn wall with those free climbers. Their answer was not to come down the wall because it all got too hard but instead they created another path around the obstacle which allowed them to continue moving forwards (or up in this case) and in the long run allowed them to reach the top (achieve their goal). Next time you get thrown a life curve ball DO NOT give up on your fitness goals or STOP eating healthy or TURN to alcohol or comfort foods for support you must create a path around your life roadblock and push on through. The fulfilment at the end of the road once you achieve what you set out to achieve will be a feeling you will never forget and one that no doubt a lot of you have achieved at some stage.
Keep pushing on guys, we all have our good and bad days, the answer is not STOP but instead REBUILD or RECREATE! If you want it bad enough I guarantee you will find a way 🙂
P.s Tommy (main climber & arguably the worlds best ever free climber) achieved this without an index finger which is considered the most important finger when climbing……..Anything is possible!!
