Oh god where do I start here….
Just a heads up I can feel one of my rants coming. Sorry in advance!
There’s about 8 billion of us on earth.
That’s a lot of people. Yet for some reason the best idea we can come up with motivating ourselves to get fit and into shape is wait for January 1 every year to start something new.
January 1 signifies the landmark date to start our lives again and drum up some bullshit new thing we are gonna begin from 12.01. Actually most start it on January 2nd as things get in the way on the 1st like hangovers, one last Maccas run, or the need for a new phone that was smashed whilst bringing in the new year. Or sometimes if the 1st doesn’t fall on a Monday we’ll justify having an extra couple of days rest because we’re about to get fit baby!! And that takes a lot of work!! I need my rest before I commit to myself you know.
(Can you tell I’m being sarcastic? It’s hard to know while I’m writing this if my sarcasm is getting across to ya. Anyway if you didn’t know then, now you do)
We humans are funny like that ay? This is gonna be my year! A fresh start. Everything is new, untouched and wonderful. My life starts now! Ahhh so many dreams and positive thoughts and goals and desires and love and happiness and shit. New year new me as some people say…. can I vomit now or later?
Doesn’t take long before these thoughts turn into something like…. fuck what a shit start to the year. This is too hard. Maybe I’ve bitten off more than I can chew. I’m a little uncomfortable now. I need a day off. Need a week off. Why is there so much traffic today? I’m back at work next week FML. God I’m so tired, might plan a holiday. Yep that’s what I need. Then I’ll start fresh from there.
I saw a funny meme the other day that went something like…
My goal for 2020 is to accomplish the goals of 2019 which I should have done in 2018 because I promised them in 2016 and planned them in 2015.
Sound familiar? Anyone?
Yep thought so.
Here’s a solution guys. You need to stop lying to yourself firstly. You can’t just flick the switch and change everything or wait for the perfect day to arrive and be ‘comfortable’ to start. It’s not gonna happen. There’s no such thing as the ‘perfect time’. It’s a myth. And you certainly can’t just remodel your bad habits overnight. Please understand this!!
This goes for anything in life let alone getting your body and mind into shape. It takes time, commitment, dedication, focus and purpose. It’s a grind sometimes. It really is. There’s gonna be good days and bad days. In fact there’s probably gonna be more bad days than good but this is what sets the goal smashers apart from the yo-yo’ers. The strong ones from the weak. The fit from the unfit. Healthy from unhealthy. Happy from the unhappy. Confident from the insecure.
You get my point.
I know it doesn’t sound sexy, or easy or convenient or something you can have NOW but if you think a preconceived idea that your whole life will magically change because the calendar ticks over to Jan 1 you’re gonna be one sad little boy or girl.
How about we just move our bodies every day! More to the point how about we stop eating crap foods, spending money on lavish cars, Netflix, endless amounts of designer clothes that barely get worn, cigarettes, boob jobs, tummy tucks, Botox, fake eyelashes, fake nails, fake tan….. what else have I missed?
You need to enjoy the process and be grateful you have the ability to move your body everyday as there’s some that are a lot less fortunate.
I was having a chat the other day about goals and purpose. When asked what my goal was I responded without hesitation. My number one goal is to have a quality of life for as long as possible so I can enjoy everything life has to offer. The day I can’t feed myself or wipe my own arse I don’t want to be here. So the objective for the rest of my days is my independence. To be conscious of my health, stay fit in the gym, eat well, treat my body and mind with respect, have fun doing it and most importantly enjoy the process.
I always believe if you want something enough you’ll do whatever it takes to get it. If not you’ll find an excuse because it either doesn’t mean enough to you or you’re simply not ready to change.
I read a stat that said 80% of New Years resolutions we make fail by February.
Don’t fall for it.
